Importance of Career Planning

REVIEW
What are your views on importance of career planning?

In most parts of the world success is defined by having a good career. Which means making the correct decision of having the right career becomes most important activity of your life. Now look at some statistics especially from a country like India. Every 15 minutes about 40 people try and commit suicide of which 3 are successful. Of the 3 people who die every 15 minutes, one of them has something to do with an academic disappointment. So that's extremely important that you don't have people killing themselves for not making a career choice or good education choice, that's point number one.

Your entire success is defined by what you do after you get your first job. Which means your first job again becomes a priority. Look at the number of people who are working today and are they really happy with what they have chosen as a career. Statistics shows that about 48 percent of the people across the globe are working in jobs that they hate and India has about 60 percent of the number and official number is about 70 which means any company if you look at 100 people of those about 70 people are working in a job that they hate. You or I should not be part of that kind of situation where we don't know or we make incorrect choices selecting the right career.

Appropriate age for Career Planning

REVIEW
What is the appropriate age to evaluate a student?

Harvard University in early nineties did a very interesting study under the name of project called spectrum. It was a project completely financed by Microsoft about 9 billion dollars was spent and about 30 schools were involved for a period of 9 years. An interesting feedback that came to be known in the world as multiple intelligence started evolving. The delivery of the project was that students can pick up skills which are measureable by the age of 4, which is a huge revolution in the area of cognitive sciences and early childhood care. So by the age of 4 you can actually measure, evaluate and most importantly there are remedial ways of correcting situations that you find at such an early age. From a psychometrics perspective 13 and a-half years of age is perfect age to evaluate students. The reason being the entire development, the cognitive development of a child is almost complete by the age of 13 and a-half years of age. Which means from an Indian perspective the student is in either 9th or 10th grade and that's why you will largely see students getting evaluated by the time they are grade 10th. More importantly after the age of grade of 10th you are out there to make some very important decisions in life: Do I take Science, Do I take Arts, Commerce or do I just focus on getting a Diploma or a Certificate. So those are important decisions that get done at that certain age. One more very interesting learned in that cognitive science was something called as brain plasticity. Brain plasticity is the ability of an individual to pickup knowledge and make some sense out of that knowledge. The brain plasticity is the highest at the age of 4 and it starts depring down by the age of 24. So if you look at it is a kind of mean when you are looking at about 10 grade again which is a good time to evaluate a student.
